The bachata

… is a rhythmic bolero, enriched by musical influences of African origin. Traditionally played with two or three guitars, accompanied by bongos, maracas, güira and bass. It has long been associated with Santo Domingo’s most disadvantaged social strata. In its early days, it received very little radio airplay, but from the 1980s onwards, thanks to the expansion of the mass media, the development of tourism, and the enthusiasm of Dominican musicians, it attracted a great deal of interest. It now enjoys international popularity and, like the merengue, has become a symbol of the Dominican Republic.
